Unions and Workers
Celebrated the Janus vs. AFSCME Supreme Court decision, a devastating and calculated attack on working people and unions.
Issued a rule change attacking roughly 800,000 home care workers’ ability to use common paycheck deductions for health insurance contributions, union dues, and other expenses.
Relaxed responsibility for companies like McDonald’s over their franchises. Under the new rule, fast food and other franchise workers face new obstacles to forming unions and raising wages.
Appointed a Labor Board that systematically rolled back workers’ rights to form unions and engage in collective bargaining with their employers.
Proposed a new, higher overtime pay threshold that would cover 3 million fewer workers than an Obama-era overtime proposal.
Classified more workers as “independent contractors” so that their employers won’t have to pay them minimum wage.
Said during his 2016 campaign that he supported a $10 federal minimum wage, but has not sought any increase in the minimum wage, currently $7.25 an hour.
Is asking the Supreme Court to rule that companies can fire workers on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Classified Uber drivers as “contractors”, creating new barriers to organizing for millions of workers in the growing gig economy.
He has vowed to eliminate the Affordable Care Act and end Medicaid as we know it and has taken steps to weaken the law, drive up the cost of coverage, undermine protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and make it harder for people to access care.
He has made reducing immigration a centerpiece of his presidency, calling immigrants criminals, separating immigrant children from their parents in hopes of deterring future immigration, and promising to build a wall at the Mexican border. He has attempted to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that protects DREAMers and to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for almost all of those who had those protections when he took office; those efforts have thus far been thwarted by the courts. He has also ramped up arrests, detentions, and deportations of people with no criminal record and has drastically reduced refugee admissions.
Has repeatedly called climate change “a hoax” and has pulled out of the Paris climate agreement, an international commitment to halt climate change.
